The Himalayas encompasses a widely rich variety of flora and fauna. In fact, its biodiversity is extraordinary and unique as the mountains inhabit many rare species of medicinal plants. There are over 10,000 species of plants in the Himalayan belt. The Himalayan Region is a mega hot spot for biological diversity. It supports over 1,748 plants species of known medicinal value. Moreover, this region has a rich heritage of traditional knowledge of medicinal plants, which has been passed down through generations.

The region's traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda, Unani, and Tibetan medicine, have relied on these plants for centuries. The Indian Himalayan region has immense cultural significance as it is home to a diverse range of indigenous communities, each with their own unique culture, traditions, and way of life. These communities have lived in the region for centuries and have developed a close relationship with nature, which is reflected in their beliefs, customs, and practices. These cultures are expressed in their vernacular art which, in contrast to international art, represents both place and culture in the anthropological sense. Vernacular art mirrors, historical and geographical forces and it provides insight into social aspirations, and thereby is important in understanding social behaviour.
